Galician Literature Day is an annual holiday celebrated in Galicia, an autonomous community in northwestern Spain, on 17 May. The day is dedicated to the Galician language and literature, as well as the cultural heritage of the region.May 17 was chosen as the date for the holiday because it was the day in 1863 that the first book in Galician was published, "Cantares Gallegos" (Galician Songs), by Rosalía de Castro. This work played a key role in the revival of the Galician language as a literary and cultural element in Galicia.
How Galician Literature Day is celebrated
Cultural events. On this day, various cultural events are held throughout Galicia, such as exhibitions, poetry readings, competitions and theatre performances in Galician.
Publications and awards. Galician Literature Day is often marked by the announcement of awards for contributions to Galician literature and culture. One of the most prestigious awards is the Galician Literature Prize (Premio de las Letras Galegas), which is given to figures who have made a significant contribution to the development of Galician literature.
School events. Schools and universities in Galicia host thematic events dedicated to the history of Galician literature and important figures in its development, such as Rosalio Ruiz Cerde, Víctor Vázquez and Eduardo Pondal.
